Styles once considered modern are forgotten and reborn again through the decades. Many trends often cycle their way through the eras and back onto the streets. Modern day street style is overwhelmingly familiar to the colors, trends and easiness of the 90's.
The craze for statement tees is no exception. In the midst of the recent election cycle, designers have taken to resurrecting slogan tees to express messages of both unity and turmoil. Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri showcased support for novelist and speaker Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s with the phrase “we should all be feminists". Michael Kors designed an oversized cashmere pullover with the expression “love” for both men and women. Haider Ackermann showed statement tees “Silence" and “Be Your Own Hero" in support of the nonprofit Silent Soldier for veterans and active military.
Denim, the staple fabric of the 90’s, feeds into the continuation of the effortless look and feel of 2017. Adding individualism and personalization, modern day trends play on the vintage style of frayed and embellished jeans and jackets. Our predicted jean trends show popularity in high waisted, ultra-wide leg and boot-cut hems, and loose light wash styles. Statement pieces such as Gucci’s appliquéd mid-rise flared jeans provide simplicity and funk through patchwork and detailed embroidery.
The appreciation for belts is in full swing too. This 90's accessory adds both a taste of personality and a cinched look to those loose denim pants. Vintage western style belts are making a reappearance as well with large buckles and embellishments. Two of our favorite pieces designed by Barney’s are constructed of black leather and feature engraved silvertone hardware. Both thick and thin, these leather accessories are statement pieces not to be ignored in 2017.
